Yeti "Grateful" 100

This is a grateful hundred for so many reasons. First of all, the volunteers. I often run hundreds out of town. I figure if I’m going to travel to a hundred it will make me finish because I spent a lot of money to not come home with a buckle. This leads to going to cool places but not really knowing anyone. The Yeti 100 is in my backyard. So many friends were running or volunteering and it made me grateful to see each one of them.
First up Monte at the 21 mile aid station. He helped me fill my bottles and then insisted I have some coke which helped me get back up that hill to the tunnel. He gave me a special snack and it was actually good. Thanks Monte.
Next, I had help at the Garcia aid station from Shawn and Nina. They were encouraging and I look forward to hearing about their Javelina adventure. Again at Hyak, Nina helped me fill my bottles and supported me. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you. Thank you and thank you for all the volunteering you do, you are sooooo appreciated.
Off to crystal springs I go. We got to run the crystal springs 19 mile section three times. My first time out I got to see Cecilia. Her cheerfulness was contagiousness. She helped me with water and snacks and all the good stuff. Thank you.
Back to Hyak I go and who do I encounter Kevin. He helped me both times back at Hyak during the night. We made noodles and mashed potatoes. He expertly rinsed by bottles and filled them with sweet tea and then later coconut water. I was so appreciative of the help. Thank you.
The second time out to crystal springs Chris supported me and kept saying I looked great and was running well. Thank you for your encouragement and support. The last time to crystal springs both Jenny and Chris were there. Jenny let me sit in her chair with my feet up and filled my bottles and listed all the snacks. Of course late in the race nothing sounds good to eat, but eat I must. We finally settled on ritz. While Chris offered coconut water and ran to his car to get it. Who are these wonderful people? They are my wonderfully supportive runner friends. So grateful am I.
I had a decent race. Wasn’t expecting much after my six day in May as I now know it takes a while to recover from over 300 miles. So I took it easy and enjoyed the scenery. I listened to two books. One was Deep Survival. Interesting stories of tragic events where some people survived and others didn’t. The author analyzed perhaps why people survive and some don’t. The narration was good as he had a deep voice. The second book I didn’t quite finish but will, Super Communicators. This one had info that I use in my coaching of new principals and some new ideas for me to try. Of course the music I listened to in between the books got me running well. In fact my legs felt great till about 80 miles in then they were tired but the sun came up and I wanted to finish before it got to hot. So on and on I went.
I had a special appearance from my extremely supportive husband. He met me with a little over two miles to go and we walked to the finish together. So grateful. So sweet. Love him.
There were four out n backs on this course so it was fun to encourage, wave and smile at runners when you passed each other. Scotty gave me a hug on one of the passes out to crystal springs and I told him it was my energy boosting hug so we did that each time we passed each other. Thank you my friend. A smile, a hug, a wave, they all give you the kind of boost you need during a challenging event such as a hundred miler. Grateful for other runners providing energy and enthusiasm. I read a quote out loud right before we started that I think is kind of appropriate, “I do my best because I’m counting on you counting on me”. Maya Angelo
Since this race was sort of a home town race I could bring a lot of stuff. I brought a chair and a big drop bag which I would pass at the start finish multiple times. I also brought a food bag with stuff I like to eat. I think this really helped as I like real food after so much junky food. I made avocados with rice and those went down super smooth.
I saw my super fast friends, Jess and Sabrina. So happy and smiley. Jess went by swiftly as she was on a mission, glad she got her PR. She is aging well. Sabrina also had Amy with her. So encouraging and supportive. I guess I like seeing my peeps running well.
Thanks to Jason and his team and all the volunteers for a great race. Was my fourth Yeti finish, three 100 milers and one 100K. Until next year…grateful I get to do these thangs.
